The ending of the Universal Championship match was botched at WWE Royal Rumble

Roman Reigns defended his Universal Championship against Kevin Owens at Royal Rumble. The match had the Last Man Standing stipulation. Reigns managed to retain his Universal title in the match, but the ending of an exciting match was botched.

Owens handcuffed Reigns to the bottom of a pillar to prevent him from getting up. But the Universal Champion’s inability to free himself quickly botched the ending. Jey Uso, Reigns’ usual aid was missing from the PPV. Despite his absence, Reigns refrained from having a fair match against Owens. He made a couple of questionable moves to ensure that he retained his title.

The two wrestlers battled all around the WWE Thunderdome. They brawled near the virtual fans, on the ramp, backstage and near the LED wall to go up against the other. The highlight of the match was undoubtedly, when Owens jumped off the top of a forklift.

Roman Reigns bought the handcuffs and punched Owens with them. But Owens managed to use the cuffs to his advantage. He cuffed Reigns to the bottom of a steel structure.

Reigns was unable to get up to his feet, as he was cuffed really low. He was unable get to his feet, as the referee started counting. When the referee’s count reached 9, Reigns pulled him into a steel beam, knocking him out. As Reigns struggled to get to his feet, Paul Heyman came in with the keys.

While Heyman tried to rescue Reigns, the Champion low blowed Owens. The second referee soon appeared and started the count. But halfway through his count, the referee stopped, indicating something was wrong. It was evident that the handcuffs weren’t coming off.

Reigns smartly took a squatting position to justify the stoppage in count. But even then it took so long for the cuffs to come off that it was pretty evident that the stoppage in count was due to  the cuffs. Soon Heyman unlocked the cuffs and Reigns applied the Guillotine choke to knock out Owens and retain his title.
