On a WWE Smackdown episode, Paul Heyman revealed that the Universal Championship will be defended at the Elimination Chamber, but not inside it. Six wrestlers from Smackdown will battle it out inside the Chamber. The winner will challenge Roman Reigns for the Universal title on the same night.
Reportedly, the original plan was to have Roman Reigns defend his title inside the Elimination Chamber. The Tribal Chief would have defended his title against 5 other wrestlers from the Smackdown roster.
But the plan changed, and now Reigns will not be entering the giant iron-structure. Dave Meltzer from Wrestling Observer Radio recently revealed the likely reason for the change in plans. The plan was changed because WWE did not want the Smackdown Elimination Chamber match to be same as the match from Raw.
Drew McIntyre will be defending his title inside the Chamber. Had Reigns done the same, the matches from the two brands would’ve mirrored each other. This was something that WWE did not want, and hence the card was changed.
Elimination Chamber match card
The first match to be announced was the WWE Championship match. McIntyre will be defending his title against Randy Orton, AJ Styles, Jeff Hardy, The Miz and Sheamus.
The other match inside the Chamber is for deciding Roman Reigns’ opponent. It will feature Kevin Owens, Jey Uso, Cesaro, Daniel Bryan, Sami Zayn and Corbin.
Asuka will put her Raw Women’s Championship on the line against Lacey Evans. A triple threat match for the Universal Championship featuring Bobby Lashley, Riddle and Keith Lee. Lana and Naomi will be challenging for the WWE Women’s Tag Team Championship.
Eliminatin Chamber airs live on 21st February, 2021.
