Boxing trials for Olympic Qualifiers for women’s category completed today in New Delhi. Six time World champion Mary Kom defeated challenger Nikhat Zareen. Mary won her bout by split verdict to qualify for Olympic qualifiers in 51kg category. But scenes after the bout were not pleasant as Nikhat supporter protested and cried foul. Even both boxer didn’t shake hands after the bout.
In 60kg bout, National Champion Simranjit Kaur defeated former world champion L.Sarita Devi. Simranjeet was quick on her feet, Sarita struggled to keep up with her precise hitting and quick reflexes.
In 57 kg bout, best boxer of Big Bout league and two time world silver medalist Sonia Lather was upstaged by a quick Sakshi Choudhary. Sakshi was too aggressive and Sonia was unable to cope up with relentless attack.
In 69kg bout, two time world bronze medalist Lovelina Borgohain defeated Lalita in a unanimous decision. In 75kg Pooja Rani outpunched Nupur by unanimous decision to book her place.
Trials for male boxing team will start tomorrow and Olympics qualifiers will be played from Feb 3-14, 2020 in Wuhan,China.
