Deepika Kumari has advanced to the quarterfinals of the Tokyo Olympics with a thrilling win. The World number 1 beat Russia’s Ksenia Perova in a shoot-off give India a great start. It was a let-off by Deepika’s standards but she held her nerves to plant a perfect 10 in the shoot-off and advance to the next round.

Deepika started off strong in the first set with a couple of nines to rightly take the first two points on offer. But the Russian struck back strongly to take the second set comfortably. The Indian regained her composure to calmly win back the third set starting off with a solid 10.

With the game almost done and dusted, Deepika failed to step up in the final two sets allowing the Russian to stage a comeback. While the fourth set was a tie with both the archers failing to step up, the seven from Deepika to start the final set could have cost her the game.

Nonetheless, it’s all done and dusted as the Indian advances to the quarterfinals. Deepika will be toe to toe with either An San of Korea or Hayakawa of Japan. The final stages of the event are set to be enthralling encounters with the best of the business gearing up to step the ante. Deepika will have to be at her absolute best if she is to bring home India’s first medal in archery.
