BREAKING: MC Mary Kom and Manpreet Singh to be flag bearers for the Indian contingent at Tokyo 2020 opening ceremony

Star boxer and 6-time world champion MC Mary Kom and Indian Men’s Hockey team captain, Manpreet Singh will be the flagbearers for the Indian contingent in the opening ceremony at Tokyo Olympics on June 23. Also, wrestler Bajrang Punia, will be the flag bearer in the closing ceremony on August 8.

“The flagbearers for the Indian contingent of Tokyo 2020 for the opening ceremony on July 23rd are Mary Kom and Manpreet Singh,” IOA President Narinder Batra said in an official letter. “The flagbearer for the Indian contingent at the closing ceremony on August 8 will be Bajrang Punia,” he further stated.

The Games, which were to be held last year were postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic and will be held from July 23-August 8. India will field a strong 201 member team, comprising of 126 athletes and 75 officials.

Abhinav Bindra, India’s lone individual gold medalist was the flag bearer for the 2016 Games at Rio while Double Olympic medalist Sushil Kumar was the flag bearer at London 2012.
