Tokyo Olympics Organisers confirms new date for torch relay

The virus-affected Tokyo Olympics torch relay will begin in March next year the organisers have confirmed. The torch relay marks the start of the grand tournament where the Olympic flame travels to numerous places.

The torch relay will begin from 25th March 2021, from the Fukushima region of Japan. The Tokyo Olympics were the first Olympics to be delayed after a historic decision to postpone the games for one year.

 “In the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic, it will additionally symbolise the light at the end of the dark tunnel; a beacon of hope for the world in the run-up to the Tokyo 2020 Games, themselves a symbol of the resilience, the unity, and the solidarity of humankind,” organisers said in a statement.

The slogan for the torch relay is ‘Hope Lights Our Way’. It highlights the reconstruction of the 2011-Earthquake hit Fukushima province. The Olympic flame will travel 47 prefectures of Japan and will travel for 121 days.

The Olympic flame reached Tokyo four days before the start of the games on 20th March this year. Since then the flame is in the host nation and is currently on display in the Olympic Museum.

The Tokyo Olympic Games are scheduled to be held from 23rd July 2021, followed by the Paralympics from August 24.
