Ace industrialist Anand Mahindra is planning to design a special SUV for people with disabilities, dedicating and gifting the first one to Tokyo Paralympics 2020 gold medalist Avani Lekhara.
In a recent tweet, Mr Mahindra mentioned how Olympic medalist and Paralympics India president Deepa Malik suggested him to design cars for specially-abled people. He made this revelation soon after Lekhara scripted history in Tokyo while becoming the first Indian female para-athlete to clinch a gold medal.
He wrote: “A week ago @DeepaAthlete suggested that we develop SUVs for those with disabilities. Like the one she uses in Tokyo. I requested my colleague Velu, who heads Development to rise to that challenge. Well, Velu, I’d like to dedicate & gift the first one you make to #AvaniLekhara”.
First gold for India at Tokyo Paralympics 2020
India’s terrific run at the Tokyo Paralympics continues on Day 6 of the event. The 19-year old shooter Avani Lekhara scored a mind-boggling 249.6 in the women’s 10m air rifle standing SH1 final to equal the world record. She was consistent from the get-go as she shot a brilliant 10+ series which ensured her a top spot despite a minor slip up in the second series. The Indian finished second with a score of 103.3 before stepping up her game in the second stage.
The world number 5 had missed out on a gold medal at the Para Shooting World Cup earlier this year by a whisker, 0.3 points. However, Avani squared up for that after writing her name with golden letters in the history books.
The Indian contingent has already added seven medals in their bag: one gold, four silver and two bronze. Apart from Avani, Discus thrower Yogesh Kathuniya (silver) and javelin throwers Devendra Jhajharia (silver) and Sundar Singh Gurjar (bronze) grabbed medals on the sixth day of the ongoing multi-nation tournament.
