A defender is an outfield player whose primary roles are to stop attacks during the game and prevent the opposing team from scoring goals. Recently, Sergio Ramos became the all-time goal-scoring defender in the La Liga history. The Madrid captain surpassed the former Barcelona legend Ronald Koeman by scoring 68 goals in the league. The 68th goal was scored from the spot in yesterday’s Real win over Sociedad. 3. Fernando Hierro (Spain, 163 Goals)

The Real Madrid legend won five La Liga and three Champions League trophies with the Los Blancos over 14 years after signing from Valladolid. He appeared in more than 500 official matches. The Spaniard scored 102 goals for the Blancos. Regarded as a highly competitive and hard-tackling defender, The Times placed Hierro at number 43 in their list of the 50 hardest footballers in history in 2007. He was the UEFA Club Defender of the Year in the 1997-1998 Season. Hierro scored record 134 goals for Los Blancos as a defender. He was picked in the FIFA XI squad for three consecutive years (1996-1998). The Spaniard scored 29 goals for the national squad making him the 5th all-time goal scorer of all-time for his nation.

2. Daniel Passarella (Argentina, 175 goals)

The Argentine former professional footballer played as a centre back. Passarella was the former manager of the Argentina and Uruguay national football teams. He was the captain of the iconic Argentine team that won the 1978 World Cup. He won the World Cup again with the 1986 Argentina team. The Argentine scored 22 goals for the blue and white stripes. Passarella started his career at Sarmiento of Junín, Buenos Aires where he scored 9 goals over 3 years. Later he joined River Plate, where he spent his prime days as the goal-scoring sweeper defender. He scored 103 goals for the Argentine club winning 6 Primera División for the club. The Argentine centre-back also played for Fiorentina and Inter Milan scoring 35 and 15 goals respectively. The World Soccer picked him as ‘The 100 Greatest Footballers of All Time’.

1. Ronald Koeman (Netherlands, 253 goals)

The Dutchman was the UEFA Champions League top scorer in the 1993-94 Season with Barcelona. Koeman is regarded as one of the best and most prolific attacking central defenders of all time, due to his eye for goal. Koeman started his professional career at FC Groningen, making his debut at the age of 17 years scoring 33 goals. He also played for the iconic Dutch club Ajax where he scored 23 goals. He then moves on to play for another Dutch side, PSV where he won the 1987-88 UEFA Champions League. Then the sensational centre-back signed with the Catalan’s Capital, Barcelona. He won 4 La Liga titles, one Copa del Rey and UEFA Champions League in 1991-92 Season. Koeman took retirement after his service to Feyenoord  in 1997. In his career, the Dutchman scored 239 goals at club level and 14 goals for the Netherlands.
