Tournament Update: U-17 FIFA Women’s World Cup 2021

On Tuesday, FIFA declared the refreshed match plan for the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup. The 2021 World Cup is set to take place in India. The competition is set to be played from 17th of February to 7th of March next year. The initial match is set to be played in Guwahati.

The tournament is held in even-numbered years since its initial year in 2008. Spain won the last edition in 2018 held in Uruguay. At first, the tournament was set to place this year. Later, FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup was postponed to the year 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Nonetheless, it will keep the first qualification standards as it is, players born on or after 1st January 2003 and at the latest 31 December 2005.

Five Indian cities — Ahmedabad, Bhubaneswar, Guwahati, Kolkata and Navi Mumbai will host all the fixtures. A total of 16 teams would compete over a course of a month in 32 matches.

North Korea is the most successful team in the U-17 Women’s World Cup winning it twice. Japan, Spain, South Korea and France all won one world cup each.

In May of 2020, the Bureau of the FIFA Council announced the new competition dates. The initial match will occur in Guwahati with the victors set to be delegated at the finals of world cup. The elimination rounds of the competition will happen on 3rd of March in Bhubaneswar and Navi Mumbai.  The Final of 2021 U-17 World Cup would take place in Navi Mumbai.

The host for the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 is yet to be declared. Declaration would take place on 25th of June.
