Bayern who overcame PSG to win the Champions League, will hope to extend their trophy haul with a Super Cup win. Their opponents on the day will be Sevilla who defeated Inter Milan to the Europa League title.

The 2019-20 season was halted due to the COVID-19 pandemic. When the European leagues restarted, it was without the fans. No one of the Top 5 leagues except the Ligue 1 has given a decision on allowance of fans to the stadiums. In France, upto 5,000 people were allowed into the stadium in the Cup finals. The same will be followed in Ligue 1.

UEFA’s official statement

“The UEFA Executive Committee today decided to allow the 2020 UEFA Super Cup to be played on 24th September 2020 in Budapest with a reduced number of spectators. It will be upto 30 percent of the capacity of the stadium, inorder to study precisely the impact of spectators on the UEFA Return to Play protocol.”

“It was confirmed that all the other UEFA matches shall continue to be played behind closed doors until further notice, as initially decided by the UEFA Executive Committee on 9 July 2020.”

“The UEFA administration will keep monitoring the situation and advise the UEFA Executive Committee if any change is required or recommended in respect of either the 2020 UEFA Super Cup or the decision that UEFA matches shall be played behind closed doors until further notice.”

UEFA President Alexander Ceferin says:

“While it has been important to show that football can carry on in difficult times, without fans, the game has lost something of its character. We hope to use UEFA Super Cup in Budapest as a pilot. It will test the return of fans to our matches.”

“We are working closely with the Hungarian Federation and its government to implement measures to ensure the health of all those attending and participating in the game.”

“We will not take risks with people’s safety.”

The decision finalises the return of fans to the stadium. The fans were missing in the UEFA matches since February when the Round of 16 matches took place. Bayern Munich and Sevilla will fight out to win the UEFA Super Cup.
