On 24th October 2020, Khabib Nurmagomdeov shocked the world by announcing his retirement after he successfully defended his lightweight belt against lightweight contender Justin Gaethje at UFC 254. The Eagle won the fight via submission in the second round and retired from the sport when he was in the prime of his career. A very emotional moment for the then lightweight champion as he decided to hang up his gloves following the devastating death of his father, Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov.

Daniel Cormier and Khabib have been teammates for a very long time and share a very special bond. The two champions were the face of AKA gym. Since his retirement, Khabib has stuck to handling his own MMA promotion and sorting things out for his teammates who still continue to ace inside the octagon for several MMA organizations. DC took to Instagram to celebrate the one-year anniversary of Khabib.

Though Khabib had a clean record in his career beating some of the best of the best. A lot of the fans give him a knock when it comes to considering him for the Greatest of All-time debates. Though Khabib was easily the most dominant lightweight champion ever, he did lack longevity. When it comes to being part of the GOAT conversation, fighters like Jon Jones, Georges St Pierre, Anderson Silva, and Jose Aldo have the edge over the Dagestani.

DC disagrees though. Cormier believes even if Khabib had not retired, he was never going to be compromised inside the octagon. “A year ago the GOAT walked away from the game undefeated, undisputed champion of the world. Miss these times in the room and can’t wait to see you in Abu Dhabi. He could have gone 40-0, 50-0, or whatever he chose, he chose 29. No one was beating this man,” wrote DC on his Instagram.
