Dustin Poirier is one of the greatest modern-day lightweights of all time. He has been a part of the UFC for more than 10 years. Poirier was just one step away from glory. In his path stood, the indomitable Khabib Nurmagomedov. The pair were set to face off at UFC 242 in September 2019. Things didn’t go as planned as ‘The Diamond’ succumbed to a third-round submission loss to ‘The Eagle.’

In the latest episode of MMA Hour with Ariel Helwani of MMA Fighting, Dustin Poirier spoke about the eluding lightweight championship and expressed his desire to get his hands on the belt as soon as possible. Poirier claimed that not becoming the undisputed lightweight champion would be his only regret, “if he were to retire now.”

“If I woke up and it ended tomorrow, I’m very happy with my career”- Dustin Poirier

Poirier was quoted as saying, “If I woke up and it ended tomorrow, I’m very happy with my career. But I would love to check that box of being an undisputed world champion…I feel like [my next fight] is for the world title. That’s what makes most sense. But when that phone rings, we’ve gotta talk.”

Speaking about beating McGregor at UFC 264, and the way the Irishman handled himself at UFC 264, Poirier said: “Some of the stuff [Conor McGregor] said was crossing the line. But I don’t write the rules. I just go in there and punish the guy for talking.”

Poirier showed remarkable recovery following UFC 242 loss to Khabib Nurmagomedov. He beat Dan Hooker in an absolute war, that earned him a fight against McGregor, which in turn rekindled their rivalry. ‘The Diamond’ went on to beat McGregor at UFC 257 and UFC 264 to set up a title fight against Charles Oliveira.

He will be looking forward to getting that elusive title shot when he takes on the Brazilian. As for Oliveira, this will be his first ever title defense. He won the title at UFC 262 after beating Michael Chandler via. knockout in the second round.
