Gregor Gillespie returned with a bang earlier this month at UFC Fight Night 187. The number 10 ranked lightweight contender beat Diego Carlos Ferreira via. unanimous decision sending a warning across the entire lightweight division. The Irishman had been out for almost 2 years, after he suffered his first loss at UFC 244. A few more wins and he will be inside the top 5.
The American spoke about his future fight plans in an interview with James Lynch. Gillespie also opened up on up and coming lightweight Islam Makhachev. Since Makhachev is booked to fight Thiago Moises, Gillespie claimed that he would have to wait for a while before he gets a shot against the Russian.
Otherwise, Gillespie had nothing but words of praise for the Dagestani. He felt that Makhachev should be ranked even higher in the lightweight division.
‘He just took a fight against someone else‘ – Gregor Gillespie on Islam Makhachev
Gillespie was quoted as saying, “Who knows? He just took a fight against someone else (Thiago Moises), so obviously, that’s not going to be next on the horizon. But that’s a guy that’s probably ranked lower than he’s capable of competing at. I could see maybe down the line if it lines up and we end up fighting each other for the belt, I don’t know. Who knows? I know a lot of people called for that, but it’s gotta make sense.” [via BJPENN.com]
“I’m going to take the one that makes the most sense that is offered to me that pushes me in the right direction. Hopefully, it’s someone ranked ahead of me.” [via BJPENN.com]
Makhachev is coming off a victory against Drew Dober at UFC 259. The Russian has been on an insane win streak, having never lost a fight since October 2015. He might end up fighting Gillespie, if the pair manage to win their next match alone. It is Moises for Makhachev. For Gillespie, his next opponent is still undecided.
Do you see this fight happening in the future? Who do you think has the edge?
