Jared “The Killa Ape” Cannonier is going to face the former interim-middleweight champion, Kelvin Gastelum, at the main event of UFC Fight Night: Cannonier vs Gastelum. Cannonier is a number three ranked middleweight and it is quite hard to believe that this guy was once a heavyweight.
Cannonier started out his career as a heavyweight, in his first fight with the UFC he defeated Shawn Jordan at UFC 182 in a heavyweight contest, this victory was followed by a knockout victory over Cyril Asker at the heavyweight division.
Although he was getting the job done at the division, Cannonier always knew he wasn’t a natural heavyweight, “I already knew when I was at heavyweight that I wasn’t a natural heavyweight compared to the other guys I’d be competing against,” Cannonier said. “I’m a realist. I’m not living in a fantasy. I know what’s what. It was only a matter of time. I knew I had to make that happen.”
Jared Cannonier started this transition back in 2016, first, he moved to the light-heavyweight division, and once he moved to Pheonix, Arizona he focused his entire training schedule to move into the middleweight.
His run in the division has been amazing till now, he even caught the eye of the champ Israel Adesanya. Izzy even offered him a title shot but he failed to get past Robert Whittaker. Now he is looking to get back on track with a victory over Gastelum.
“Jared Cannonier weighed more than 300 pounds,” Jared’s wife reveals a shocking fact!
Cannonier meet her wife while he was serving in the military, although he was removed from his service, he wanted to earn a good living for his family, and his wife remembers the hardships he went through.
“When we were in Alaska, we were cold and kind of eating for comfort,” Cat recalled, “so that’s when we really got heavy. When me and Jared first got together, he wasn’t really that big. We were young, didn’t have kids, he was swole — in shape. He was around 225 pounds and had these massive, in-shape arms.”
