Jared Cannonier was scheduled to face Paulo Costa at UFC Fight Night on the 21st of August. However, Borrachinha pulled out from the 4th of June due to an unknown reason, stating that he had never accepted the fight in the first place. However it was later revealed that he had withdrawn due to payment issues.
Costa was replaced by Kelvin Gastelum. More recently, speaking in an interview with Submission Radio, Jared Cannonier revealed that fighters like Gastelum are as tough as they come. He acknowledged the American’s never-say-die spirit and ability to fight big fighters despite being a small-statured man.
‘Kelvin has got a good wrestling base‘ – Jared Cannonier
Cannonier was quoted as saying, “Kelvin has got a good wrestling base. He’s got knockout power in his hands. He’s not afraid to mix it up with bigger guys. He’s been in the middleweight division since he had come up from the welterweight division. He’s not necessarily a big middleweight…You know, he’s got the heart of a Mexican warrior and a big a** head to go along with it.“
Cannonier is coming off a loss against Robert Whittaker at UFC 254. The number 4 ranked middleweight was dominated by the Reaper for the entire 3 rounds, as he ended up suffering a broken arm following the fight.
Kelvin Gastelum had already stepped in as a replacement fighter for Paulo Costa
Gastelum only recently stepped in as a replacement fighter for Paulo Costa. Costa was scheduled to face Robert Whittaker on the 17th of April, but pulled out from the fight due to flu. On extremely short notice, in stepped Gastelum. Despite losing the fight via. unanimous decision, Gastelum put on a warrior’s performance against Whittaker, earning accolades for his immense durability.
He will be coming into the Cannonier fight with positives taken from that night on the 17th of April.
