Khabib Nurmagomedov announced his retirement after beating Justin Gaethje at UFC 254 in October, 2020. The Russian explained in the post-fight interview with Jon Anik that he wouldn’t fight without his late father by the ringside and also that he had promised his mother about Gaethje fight being his last.
Despite his retirement, a lot of rumors were afloat, speculating his comeback to the UFC. But Khabib Nurmagomedov put all those rumors to rest by confirming that he was officially retired, on the 18th of March, 2021.
In a recent interview with Betway Insider, Khabib’s coach Javier Mendez revealed if ‘The Eagle’ would ever come back to the UFC. Although, Mendez didn’t seem confident about his greatest client returning to the Octagon, he did say that Khabib might return on condition.
‘It’s him still being in his prime’ – Javier Mendez
Javier Mendez first explained how much Khabib value the relationship with his mother. He was quoted as saying, “I don’t talk to him about if he’s tempted to get back in, so I don’t know. What I do know is his mother’s bond and his mother’s wishes are extremely important to him and if he did ever decide, it would have to be his mother and him talking, and his mother would have to give him her blessing.” [via Betway Insider]
Mendez then went to say that Khabib would definitely not fight if he goes past his prime: “I’d definitely say that when he’s past his prime, definitely not because he’s not going to compete when he’s not able to compete. But I can honestly say that if he’s still in his prime, there’s always the possibility that he and his mother could talk. I can say that…I wouldn’t bet against it, but I know there is a possible situation that I could see.”
He concluded divulging the one possibility that might see the ‘Eagle’ return: “If there was something that would bring him back, it’s him still being in his prime and him and his mother talking.” [via Betway Insider]
Khabib is set to return to the United States as he has a busy July ahead of him. Fellow Dagestani fighters, notably, Islam Makhachev and Aboubakar Nurmagomedov will be having their fights.
