Khabib Nurmagonedov’s manager Ali Abdelaziz has said thag Justin Gaethje has left the chance to face UFC rival Conor McGregor even after being told by lightweight king Khabib to take on to the Irishman.
The passing of Khabib’s father and trainer last month has put a halt on his scheduled matches and timeline. Khabib was supposed to defend his title against interim champ Gaethje. But this trajedy has put an uncertainty around this fight. However, the Dominance MMA head Ali Abdelaziz has confirmed that the Russian would face his rival in 2020.
Gaethje vs Khabib
Abdelaziz also told that Khabib had suggested Gaethje to fight McGregor in the meantime but the American refused this offer. He said, “Justin said no, Khabib told me to tell Justin to go fight Conor. Justin said no. Listen, we dictate this.”
In the same chat, he said, “Conor right now, he can be a backup fighter. He can go make weight and he can maybe make some money but at the end of the day, [Khabib and Justin] are the two champions.”
Although McGregor has lost to Khabib in 2018, he still remains the biggest draw in mixed martial arts. The fight for either Khabib or Gaethje against McGregor is expected to outsell the numbers if they face eachother. But as per Abdelaziz, his fighters are more motivated by athletic competition than any potential ‘red panty night’.
News on Conor Mcgregor
Speaking of the Irishman, he said, “He’s not even number three, he’s number four or five. Conor can go fight Nate [Diaz], he can fight [Joge] Masvidal. [He needs] to get some wins. He needs to fight some good opponents.”
Abdelaziz further admitted that there was one shortcut through which he can fast-track title ambitions. He said, “I said, the only way to fight Khabib is if he fights Islam Makhachev – and [then] Khabib will fight him.”
