Paulo Costa has always been physically huge for the middleweight division. The fighter is built like a tank and has the muscle mass of a bodybuilder. In his most recent fight against Marvin Vettori, Costa failed to make the initial weight.
Consequently, the fight was shifted to light heavyweight. It followed a lot of criticism for the Brazilian fighter. Many called out him for being unprofessional and undisciplined. Moreover, Costa’s careless attitude towards cutting weight created a stigma around the fighter for missing weight.
During the pre-fight press conference of UFC 278, Rockhold made fun of Costa by asking whether he’s gonna successfully make the weight. He said :
“I want you to know your weight. Are you gonna make weight? Are you gonna f**** weight?”
To which Costa replied by saying, “You want to see my weight? F**** you.”
“We love proving u doubters wrong”- Paddy Pimblett reacts after Paulo Costa makes weight
Coming to this fight, fans and MMA pundits thought that Costa is going to continue his habit of missing weight and won’t make weight this time as well. But to everyone’s surprise, the fighter successfully met the 185.5 lbs mark ahead of the fight this weekend.
Before the official weigh-ins, Costa promised fans that he would make the weight and especially took Paddy Pimblett’s name for giving him a few tips for weight cut. He said :
“Yeah, he(Pimblett) gave me a few instructions. Man, if you look for me and Paddy, it’s not a joke anymore. We have to cut a lot of weight in a short time. When I saw Paddy fight two weeks ago, I tweeted this I said man, this is a short time to cut that much weight, but he did it. He did great, and me as well! We know how to cut weight.”
Soon after making the weight, Paulo took his Instagram to write “We are the master of the cut weight”. Paddy Pimblett reacted to this by writing “We love proving u doubters wrong me and the big guy” on his Instagram story. Certainly, Paulo proved his critics wrong. Moreover, this time Costa is looking the most lean in recent years. He isn’t as bulky as he used to be. However, fans must hope that his weight cut shouldn’t affect his performance.
