UFC President Dana White has revealed that Nick Diaz vs Robbie Lawler is currently in the works for a UFC event in September. The news was reported by Aaron Bronsteter of TSN who had learned the same in an interview with the UFC boss. The fight will mark the return of Diaz after more than 6 years.
Diaz had been teasing a possible return to the UFC for almost a year, and now it looks like he will soon have his wishes granted. Rumors of Diaz making a return were rife after he turned up at UFC 261.
Bronsteter tweeted, “BREAKING: Nick Diaz vs. Robbie Lawler IN THE WORKS (not yet official) as a co-main for an event in September per Dana White.”
The last time Nick Diaz vs Robbie Lawler took place it was 2004!
He then followed it up with a funny reference – “Things that did not exist the last time that Diaz and Lawler fought: -iPhones -Blu-ray Discs -Twitter -Google Chrome -The Big Bang Theory Things that did exist: -New episodes of Friends and Frasier -The Montreal Expos -Oldsmobiles.”
Nick Diaz, last fought Anderson Silva in the year 2015. The pair faced off at UFC 183 on the 31st of January. Silva won the fight via. unanimous decision. However, the result was overturned and the match was deemed a no-contest after both Silva and Diaz tested positive for banned substances.
Robbie Lawler, on the other hand, last fought Neil Magny in August 2020. The former welterweight champion lost the match via. unanimous decision. He is currently on a two-fight skid, with his MMA record standing at 29 wins and 14 losses.
The last time Diaz and Lawler fought, was more than 17 years ago at UFC 47. A young and ruthless Nick Diaz knocked out Lawler in the second round of their fight. Can Lawler exact revenge finally after 17 years?
