UFC Vegas 33 Prelims

After losing a plethora of fights, UFC Vegas 33 is here. The card is headlined by a middleweight fight between Uriah Hall and Sean Strickland. Hall is ranked number 8 in the middleweight division, and is coming off a victory over Chris Weidman in a rather bizarre match. Strickland, on the other hand, is ranked number 11 in the MW rankings, and last defeated Krzysztof Jotko in May, this year.

However, before that, we had the prelims that kicked things off. Here are the results from the UFC Vegas 33: Uriah Hall vs Sean Strickland prelims.

Welterweight: Philip Rowe vs Orion Cosce

Round 1:

Brilliant takedown from Cosce in the first minute. Ground control from Cosce for almost two minutes. He then let Rowe get up. Solid elbow from Cosce off the break, although Rowe wasn’t affected that much. Rowe then ate some big shots from Cosce, but he followed it up with a strong knee. Strong finish from Rowe. But still 10-9 Cosce

Round 2:

A barrage of strikes from Rowe, after a brief struggle between him and Cosce in the beginning. A brief delay following a strike to the groin. Cosce then took a ton of damage to the head following a ton of punches from Rowe. However, he still held on despite everyone being convinced that a finish was imminent. Cosce picked himself up and responded with a few strikes of his own and took Rowe to the fence. Another episode of strikes from Rowe followed, he began with several knees and finished it with a big right hand. What a fight.

Winner: Philip Rowe def. Orion Cosce via. TKO (Round 2)

Flyweight: Ryan Benoit vs Zarrukh Adashev

Round 1:

Quick start from Adashev. He attempted a few strikes and landed partially. Adashev’s leg kicks were powerful. Adashev connected with a right. Benoit began limping already. Lightning-fast hands from Adashev. Adashev destroyed Benoit’s leg. Out of nowhere, Benoit clipped Adashev knocking him down to the ground. Adashev however weathered the storm, and saw off the round. 10-9 Adashev

Round 2:

Several strikes exchanged by both the fighters. Adashev clipped Benoit with a strong left. A nice combo from Adashev, and followed it up with a kick. Benoit responded with a hook. 10-9 Adashev

Round 3:

Massive right hand with Adashev. A resilient Benoit still landed several strikes successfully. Several strikes exchanged by both the fighters. Benoit hurt Adashev but he recovered. Adashev saw off the round. 10-9 Adashev

Winner: Zarrukh Adashev def. Ryan Benoit via. unanimous decision (30-27×2, 29-28)

Women’s Strawweight: Jinh Yu Frey vs Ashley Yoder

Round 1:

Early charge from Yoder, but she fell into a clinch. Left hand from Yoder. Frey responded with a left hand of her own a few seconds later. Not much action from both the fighters barring a few sporadic strikes. Heavy exchange from both the fighters towards the end of the round. 10-9 Frey

Round 2:

Both women traded back and forth with leg kicks. Left hand from Frey. She hurt her with another one. Several left hands from Frey. Yoder ate a ton of strikes. Several exchanges from both the fighters. Yoder got back into the fight with a barrage of one-twos. 10-9 Frey

Round 3:

Not much activity except for partially connecting strikes. Yoder attempted a takedown but was stuffed by Frey. Solid leg kick from Frey. A couple of exchanges from both. A strong finish in an even round from both the fighters. 10-9 Frey

Winner: Jinh yu Frey def. Ashley Yoder via. unanimous decision (30-27×3)

Featherweight: Danny Chavez vs Kai Kamaka

Round 1:

Both the fighters played it safe for more than a minute. A few sporadic exchanges from both the fighters. Kamaka landed a few good calf kicks on Chavez reddening his legs. 10-9 Kamaka

Round 2:

Good start from Chavez to round 2. Kamaka with a calf kick. And another one after a brief exchange. One-two from Chavez. A massive break following an eye poke on Chavez followed. As soon as the fight resumed Kamaka struck Chavez’s groin, leading to another break. A point deduction for Chavez. Heavy exchanges from both the fighters followed after the fight resumed again. 10-9 Kamaka

Round 3:

A barrage of exchanges from both the fighters saw an explosive start to the final round. Big elbows from Chavez followed. A lot of clinching along the cage. Strong finish from Chavez in the end. 10-9 Chavez

Result: Danny Chavez vs Kai Kamaka ended in a majority draw (29-27, 28-28×2) Kamaka was deducted a point

Lightweight: Chris Gruetzemacher vs Rafa Garcia

Round 1:

Quick exchange from both the fighters right in the beginning. Garcia rocked Gruetzemacher in the very first minute. He was hanging on. Garcia was unloading bombs. Takedown from Garcia and into half-guard he went. A solid right hand from Gruetzemacher. Gruetzemacher came back strongly towarsds the end. 10-9 Gruetzemacher

Round 2:

Tired shots from both the fighters. Another successful takedown from Garcia. A dog fight from both the fighters. A very closely fought round. 10-9 Gruetzemacher

Round 3:

Gruetzemacher began hurting Garcia right from the beginning. Uppercut from Gruetzemacher. Takedown from Garcia. Plenty of ground control from Garcia. 10-9 Garcia

Winner: Chris Gruetzemacher def. Rafa Garcia via. unanimous decision (29-28×3)
