The UFC Welterweight champion, Kamaru Usman added one more title defense in his perfect resume with a win against Colby Covington in a rematch at UFC 268. After Covington, the number third-ranked UFC Welterweight fighter, Leon Edwards was next in the line for the title shot.

Edwards was booked to cement his title contention in a match against Jorge Masvidal at UFC 269. But Masvidal pulled out his name from this fight due to an undisclosed injury and now Leon Edwards is stuck again for a clear title shot. Apart from Edwards, the number fourth-ranked UFC Welterweight fighter, Vicente Luque is also in line for the title shot.

Luque has lost only one out of his last ten fights and he is on a four-fight winning streak. Vicente Luque served as the replacement fighter for the main event of UFC 268, but he missed the weight and talking about the same in his latest interview with Ag Fight, Vicente Luque says,

“I would’ve taken that fight against Usman, I saw a lot of people talking about that fight and I didn’t say much because a lot of people were asking for it. I’m always ready. I was unable to make weight to be the replacement for Usman and Covington,”

“But I got the news on a 10-day notice. If the UFC calls me, I’ll take it and sign the contract. In one month it would be easy to make weight and I would still have time to have a good camp.” {H/t BloodyElbow}

Vicente Luque face Leon Edwards for the first time back in 2017 on UFC Fight Night: Manuwa vs Anderson and faced a unanimous decision loss in that fight. That is why Luque wants to face him once again and avenge his loss, which would also result in making it clear who is next in line for the title shot.

Luque continued, “I think a rematch with Edwards would erase all doubt, some people think I should fight for the belt. Others think Leon should. He’s on a big win streak, but I’ve been doing some damage in this division, getting wins. A fight between the both of us would erase all doubt and define who’s the next challenge for Usman.” {H/t BloodyElbow}
