Over the years, there were many fights that were considered to be the biggest fight of the lightweight division. In 2018 it was Khabib Nurmagomedov vs Conor McGregor. 2019 had Dustin Poirier vs Max Holloway. 2020 was devastating with Khabib retiring but also setting up the biggest fight in the lightweight division against Justin Gaethje, considered to be the Russian’s greatest performance.

2021 had a new fighter crowned champion and it was deserving of the amount of sweat and blood Charles Oliviera had put into this sport. However, Justin Gaethje vs Michael Chandler deserves the top spot for their absolutely brilliant bout.

But with all these celebrated matchups, Joe Rogan says that none come close to as tough and bigger of a fight than Khabib Nurmagomedov vs Charles Oliviera.

I think Khabib could do that to almost anybody [referring to the Gaethje fight], except maybe Oliviera“, said the color commentator on his podcast ‘The Joe Rogan Experience’. “People look at some of the losses that Oliviera had. You can’t look at those. You gotta look at the wins. You gotta look at who he is now.”

Oliviera went on to successfully defend his title against Dustin Poirier, submitting him with a standing rear-naked choke, and fans and pundits have expressed their interest in seeing him and Khabib take on each other.

Oh yes, that would have been the fight. And maybe it could be, maybe it could be still. Khabib might decide at one point in time, you know?

He said that ‘The Eagle’ could do that to almost anybody but Charles Oliviera might be an exception.

While speaking about the way he submitted ‘The Highlight’ Rogan says, “He [Gaethje] tapped and then he [Khabib] went out. Uh, but the way he did it, he went through him. He went right through him. I think Khabib could do that to almost anybody, except maybe Oliviera.”

Speaking about Khabib he says, “He’s arguably one of the very best submission artists as well as being one of the greatest fighters of all time. You watch the way he goes through Gaethje like that, that is an elite, high-level, precision submission. Oliviera does that too. Oliviera does it, man that’s what makes you think like, wow, that would make the fight with Khabib so interesting.”
