Marvin Vettori is set to fight Israel Adesanya for the middleweight title this weekend. He will be challenging the ‘Last Stylebender’ in a rematch, three years in the making. The pair first fought at UFC on Fox: Poirier vs Gaethje, back when they were lesser-known fighters in the UFC. Just three years later, they have become middleweight elites, Adesanya especially.
Vettori, who holds a brown belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu is known for his excellent ground-game, which has grown in leaps and bounds over the past few years. He has never been finished in his career, and has an impressive record of 17 wins and just 4 losses in his MMA career. Vettori is just 27 years old and has a long way to go.
Where exactly is the number 3 ranked middleweight from?
The name Marvin Vettori might not sound entirely English or American. In fact Marvin is an English name, but Vettori? Definitely not. The number 3 ranked middleweight, Marvin Vettori hails from a city called Trento in Italy. He is an Italian by birth, and hence his nickname – ‘The Italian Dream’.
In December 2020, when Vettori took on Jack Hermansson, he became the first-ever Italian to headline a UFC Fight Card. And what’s more? He will become the first-ever Italian to win a UFC title, if he manages to beat Israel Adesanya in the main event of UFC 263.
Marvin Vettori began training MMA at the age of 13
Vettori began training MMA when he was just 13 years old, and when the sport was quite unknown and in its development stages in his country. Hence he decided to move to the United Kingdom just after finishing high school. Having plied his trade in the United Kingdom and Italy for almost 4 years, in 2016, he got his calling from the UFC, and from then on, there has been no looking back.
