Alexander Zverev cruised past Borna Coric 1-6, 7-6(6), 7-6(1), 6-3 and reached the semis. Though not playing his best, he aced the deal hitting 52 winners to 46 unforced errors. Being behind the baseline for long, Zverev entwined a cross-court forehand passing shot for a winner to get back on serve as the 27th seed needed just two service holds from taking a two-set lead. And from that moment, there was no looking back.

“At some point I told myself, ‘Look, if you keep playing like this, you’re going to be down two sets to love in a blink,” Zverev said post-match.

“I needed to be more aggressive, needed to go into the rallies and be more stable as well. At the end of the day, this is what I did and this is why it worked out for me.” he added.

Busta beats Shapovalov

Pablo Carreno Busta

Pablo Carreno Busta winged past Shapovalov with a 3-6, 7-6, 7-6, 0-6, 5-2 win, reaching his second hard court grand slam semifinals. Despite relentless fight and 76 winners, seed 12 Shapovalov gave in to the imperturbable Busta after 4 hours 9 minutes. Overcoming a hip injury, he tirelessly retrieved balls and backfired Shapovalov’s offensive power.

“I’m destroyed, but I’m very happy. It’s incredible to be back in the semi-finals,” Carreno Busta said to ESPN’s James Blake post-match.

“I think I’m very comfortable on these courts. I think the past months during quarantine was very tough for everyone. I worked very hard with my coach. When you work hard, normally the results arrive. Maybe not in the first tournament, but I’m very lucky to be in the semi-finals.” he added.

Spaniard next faces Zverev in the semis.
