Veteran Indian batsman Robin Uthappa started his international career on a bright note. The opener smashed a quickfire 86 against England back in 2006, making strong claims of a bright future ahead.

The Mumbai cricketer went on to win the 2007 World T20 and played 46 ODIs. Howver averaging just 25.94 while amassing just 934 runs, meant he was shown the exit door by BCCI. His 249 runs in 13 T20Is didn’t do him much favour too.

Now at the age of 34, Uthappa’s way back to the Indian team looks like a long shot. However, Rajasthan Royals’ new batsman is still optimistic on getting back to the Men in Blue. The wicket-keeping batsman says the desire is still inside him to don the Indian jersey.

“I still have that fire burning in me, I want to compete and do well at the highest level. You can never really write yourself off. Anyone who’s playing competitive cricket always hopes to represent their country,” Uthappa told IANS.

The batsman has already reached the UAE for the upcoming IPL 2020 season with the rest of the Rajasthan Royals team. He is currently under quarantine for the next seven-day.

Speaking from his hotel room in quarantine, Uthappa stressed that a good IPL season is all that he needs to reignite his international career.

“A good IPL season with the Royals could do wonders for me and could possibly get me back in the reckoning for the Indian team. I am someone who looks at things from a positive reference, even in negative situations,” said Uthappa.

He further added that it is important to believe in oneself to make it back to the Indian team. He said there is an outside chance for him to be back at the biggest of stages and that keeps his dream moving.
