Following the respective directives of the Telangana and Karnataka governments, the Pullela Gopichand Academy in Hyderbad and Prakash Padukone Academy in Bangalore have been shut down for two weeks.
“I feel sad for the sports community. They follow a healthy lifestyle, they have good immunity, unlike the general public. So, I believe the government should look at ways to test these athletes who have already qualified and allow them to train,” Vimal told.

“Badminton is not a contact sports, so you can maintain that 5 feet distance. So, I believe at least players who have qualified should be allowed to train. Otherwise, if you don’t train for 15 days, it will take another two months to get back to match fitness,” he said. Wants to start training since it has been a long-time player have trained due to the strict government guidelines.

When asked in an interview What has exactly changed at the academy after the pandemic in the way training is conducted, Vimal stated that the players have been training and their home, and some have started coming to the court.

He said that the training drills remain intact as those could not be changed in a such small amount of time. The body temperature is mandatorily checked for every played coming in to play and those having cough or cold are sent home at once.

Hand sanitizers are available at the centre in abundance. The most important point being the community spread of the virus is been taken care of as no player is allowed to touch another player and are advised not to spend more time in the changing room. Such things are very clear. Players are also advised not to go out with their friends in the academy and go straight home after training. Everyone has to take responsibility. Other than that, nothing much can be done.

The players coming for training residing outside the state are at present not allowed to join because of the state quarantine rules. He also stated that he would have let go of the practice if it was some other year, but as the Olympics is near players have to train and train regularly for keeping a consistent performance throughout the year.

Vimal suggested the domestic tournaments start district and state-level competitions till September since there are many talented and enthusiastic players who want to play.
