Royal Challengers Bangalore and Mumbai Indians played out a nail-biter for the ages yesterday in the Indian Premier League 2020. Put in to bat, Royal Challengers rode on openers Aaron Finch and Devdutt Padikkal’s half-centuries before explosive batting at the death from AB de Villiers and Shivam Dube led RCB past the 200 mark. Chasing a mammoth total, MI didn’t get going and lost wickets at regular intervals.
But a stunning assault from Ishan Kishan and Kieron Pollard at the end helped MI tie the game and take it to a Super Over. Kishan fell one run short of a maiden IPL century. In the Super Over, Navdeep Saini delivered for RCB restricting MI to just 7 runs.
Despite Jasprit Bumrah bowling accurate yorkers, RCB chased down the target of 8 runs courtesy boundaries from AB de Villiers and Virat Kohli. Saini emerged as the hero for RCB as his excellent and assured over was the reason RCB got a low target to chase in the one over eliminator.
Virat Kohli credits Navdeep Saini
Speaking at the post-match presentation, RCB skipper Virat Kohli praised Navdeep Saini for his super over and said, “Outstanding Super Over from him (Saini), bowling against Hardik (Pandya) and (Kieron Pollard). I think the longer boundary helped him gain some confidence with his yorker, because he has got the pace and then he was using the wide yorker well too. The guys showed real good composure to get these two points in the bag and very crucial points at early stages of the tournament”
Kohli also credited Ishan Kishan and Kieron Pollard for bringing Mumbai back into the game. “It was such a roller-coaster of a game. We batted well in the first innings to get us past 200 and then the start of bowling was outstanding. They played well in the middle overs, waited for the dew to kick in. For Pollard and Ishan to bat the way they did was outstanding to keep them in the game,” he added.
