A BlackClash exhibition match between New Zealand’s former cricket stars and rugby players was organized yesterday. The lip-smacking match-up delivered the goods as the two sides played out a thriller for the ages. The likes of Stephen Fleming, Daniel Vettori, Brendon McCullum, Nathan McCullum, Peter Fulton and Scott Styris were all a part of the cricket side that eventually ended up winning.
Batting first and making use of the small boundaries of the stadium in Christchurch, Team Cricket scored 189 runs in 20 overs thanks to a 51-ball 80 from Peter Fulton. In response, Team Rugby were going well and looked to be on course for a win with the match going to the final over and 8 runs required. Daniel Vettori however, held his nerve and picked up two wickets to ensure Team Cricket won the encounter by two runs.
Jimmy Neesham turns umpire
One of the umpires for the encounter was the season former umpire from New Zealand, Billy Bowden. The other umpire was the surprise package for the day as it was none other than current New Zealand cricketer Jimmy Neesham. The all-rounder has been nursing a finger injury but that didn’t seem to stop him from taking part in a cricket match, albeit in a different role.
Neesham was seen enthusiastically taking on umpiring duties throughout the course of the thrilling encounter. It remains to be seen when the New Zealand will be back as a cricketer following his injury. He has meanwhile, been retained by his Indian Premier League franchise Kings XI Punjab.
