The Sheffield Shield which is the domestic first-class tournament in Australia is underway at the moment and a plethora of Australia’s test stars are taking part in it. The tournament will consist of 24 league matches and one final which will take place in April. More than half of the tournament has concluded now with 14 matches being played and the quality of cricket has been excellent so far.

There are six teams in the tournament and at present, it is Queensland leading the way with 3 wins and 1 draw from their 4 games. At second place is New South Wales which is followed by Western Australia and Victoria. Tasmania and South Australia find themselves with no win and find themselves languishing at the bottom with no hope of getting their tournament back on track.

A recently concluded match between Western Australia and South Australia saw a thrilling finish as the match ended in a draw. Earlier, South Australia had posted a terrific first innings total of 510 thanks to skipper Travis Head’s double-century. In reply, Western Australia posted 409 riding on centuries from Cameron Bancroft and the man touted as Australia’s next big thing – Cameron Green.

South Australia then declared on 230/9 to set their opponents a target of 331. Western Australia lost the plot in the chase as they kept losing wickets in quick succession on the final day. In the end, it boiled down to 1 ball left with the No. 11 batsman Liam O’Connor batting. His defensive stroke off the final ball looped up only to fall short of the fielders in thrilling fashion as the match ended in a draw.
