7 Most successful women at the Australian Open

18-time Grand Slam champion Martina Navratilova won just three titles in Melbourne Park but those are enough to get her in the list. The American great won the titles in 1981, 1983, 1985 while finishing runner-up in 1975, 1982 and 1987. 

Martina Hingis, the 5-time Grand Slam champion won three of her majors in Australia. She won a hattrick of titles from 1997 to 1999. The title in 1997 made her the youngest Grand Slam champion ever, a record that stands to date. Hingis was  16 years and three months when she won in 1997. She reached the finals from 1999 to 2001 as well but lost all on 3 occasions. 

Monica Seles was another teen champion in Melbourne when she won the title in 1991. Seles went on to make a double title defense clinching the title in 1992 and 1993 as well. After her return from the stabbing incident, she won her 4th title in 1996 to become the joint-second most successful player at the major.

Steffi Graf also won a hattrick of titles in Australia. The German went undefeated from 1988 to 1990 before adding her 4th title in 1994. She was a runner-up in 1993 as well but lost to then arch-rival Seles in the finals in another chapter of their rivalry. 

Evonne Goolagong Cawley was one of the most consistent players at the Australian Open during the 1970s. She played in 7 straight finals between 1971 to 1977. While she lost the first three finals, Cawley went on to win four on the trot from 1974 to 1977 defeating four different players in each finals. 

Margaret Court, the most successful Grand Slam champion won a total of 11 Australian Open titles. The 24-time major winner won 7 titles in the Amateur Era while winning 4 in the Open Era. Court's win in the Open Era came in the years 1969, 1970, 1971, 1973. Prior to that, she won 7 straight titles from 1960 to 1966 stamping her authority at the major.

Serena Williams remains the most successful champion at the Australian Open. The 23-time major winner won 7 titles at the Grand Slam. No other player has won more than 5 in the Open Era. Of her 7 titles, Williams made a title defense only once. Her wins came in the years 2003, 2005, 2007, 2009, 2010, 2015, 2017. She lost only 1 finals in Melbourne during her career, in 2016.
