7 Tennis players who retired in 2022

3-time Grand Slam champion Ash Barty announced her retirement in  March 2022. She became the second WTA player to retire as a World No. 1. Her last-ever match was her win in the finals of the 2022 Australian Open.

Former World No. 5 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga bid adieu to the sport in front of home fans at the 2022 French Open. Battling injuries, he continued to bow down on home turf. He lost to Casper Ruud in the first round of Roland Garros.

Kevin Anderson, 2-time Grand Slam runner-up and former World No. 5 retired after the 2022 Miami Masters. While he did not announce his retirement then, his defeat as a lucky loser became his last match ever. 

French veteran and former World No. 6 Gilles Simon had announced his plan to retire at the end of the season back in May. He chose to go out in front of home fans at the 2022 Paris Masters as he made it to the Round of 16 before losing to Felix Auger-Aliassime. 

2009 US Open champion Juan Martín del Potro underwent four surgeries to return to the Tour. But it did not prove futile and he unwillingly said goodbye to the sport  at the 2022 Argentina Open amidst cheering compatriots. 

23-time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams finally called it a day on her 27-year long career at home slam 2022 US Open. She made a brave run to the 3rd round before losing to Ajla Tomljanovic as the whole world lauded her. 

20-time Roger Federer retired in one of the most emotional farewells of the season. The former World No. 1 player his last singles match at 2021 Wimbledon but retired at the 2022 Laver Cup going out in a doubles defeat partnering Rafael Nadal who sobbed as much Federer did.
