EXPLAINED:  Salt Bae controversy  at 2022 FIFA World Cup

FIFA is looking into celebrity restaurant owner Salt Bae, real name Nusret Gokce, after he crashed Argentina's 2022 FIFA World Cup festivities.

Gokce, a Turkish chef, gained fame as Salt Bae after inventing a strange way to season steaks in his restaurants.

After the Abiceleste won the championship, Gokce received harsh criticism for his presence. Video showed players being awkwardly compelled to pose for photos while the restaurant owner carried the trophy and got selfies.

Since then, FIFA has admitted that Gokce's entry onto the field was unapproved and that only heads of state and World Cup champions are allowed to handle the illustrious trophy.

"Following a review, FIFA has been establishing how individuals gained undue access to the pitch after the closing ceremony at Lusail stadium  on 18 December. The appropriate internal action will be taken," a FIFA spokesperson told

The US Open Cup official Twitter account announced in a tweet that Turkish chef Nusr-et Gokce, also known as Salt Bae, has been barred from the US Open Cup final.
