When Luis Suarez crushed millions of Ghanaian dream
Still one of the most controversial moments in the history of the FIFA World Cup, the Ghanaian fans still hold a strong grudge against Luis Suarez for his actions a decade ago.
Ghana faced Uruguay in the quarter-finals of the 2010 FIFA World Cup. After a balanced game from each team, the score remained level as both nations march into extra time.
Ghana had a clear chance of scoring at the last minute of the game from a corner. Although, Luis Suarez had different plans for the game. He used his hand to clear the ball on the goal line to deny the Ghana attackers from scoring.
He was shown a red card immediately by the referee and a penalty was awarded to the African side. Call it fate, but Ghana missed their chance to take the lead in the 120th minute of the game.
Ghana lost the penalty shootouts 4-2 to the South American nations, crashing out of the tournament. A defeat to remember for the African nation.
Luis Suarez took one for the team in that match after he saved the ball from going inside the net. He was widely criticized for his actions but also reserved a spot in the 2010 FIFA World Cup’s semi-finals.
