NBA players retire after giving their all, but like Michael Jordan, some return for the love of the sport or to satisfy their hunger to compete. The league welcomes these superstars back.
Michael Jordan
After winning his sixth NBA championship with the Chicago Bulls in 1998, Jordan retired from the game for the second time. He came out of retirement in 2001 to play for the Washington Wizards.
Magic Johnson
Johnson retired from the NBA in 1991 after announcing that he had contracted HIV. He briefly returned to the Lakers in 1992 and played in the 1992 All-Star Game.
Dave Cowens
Cowens, known for his hard work and heart, led the Celtics to two NBA titles. After retiring, he came back to play for the Bucks, but was sidelined by injury and retired again.
George Mikan
In the NBA's early days, George Mikan dominated as the league's first great big man. After six seasons, he retired a champion, but returned for one last disappointing season.
Richie Guerin
Richie Guerin, a high-scoring guard, was drafted by the Knicks in 1954. He later played and coached for the St. Louis Hawks and returned as player-coach in 1968.
