A turnover in basketball happens when the team in possession of the ball loses it to the other team before attempting a shot.

A team can lose possession in basketball by various means like getting the ball stolen, stepping out of bounds, committing a violation or an offensive foul.

On March 9, 1971, the San Francisco Warriors set a dubious NBA record with 45 turnovers in a game against the Boston Celtics.

To put this in perspective, the average number of turnovers per game in the 2022-2023 NBA season was around 12.5.

Jack Barry, a colleague of Boston Globe's Bob Ryan, is credited with developing the concept of turnovers. The ABA started recording them in 1967-68, later adopted by NBA after the merger in 1977-78.

Jason Kidd and John Drew hold the NBA record for the most turnovers in a game, each committing 14. Kidd did it in 2000 for the Phoenix Suns and Drew in 1978 for the Atlanta Hawks.
