MMA is one of the most dangerous sports in the world, and fighters risk their lives every time. Inside the octagon, anything can happen, and it is the responsibility of the coaches not to let their fighter incur any unnecessary and life-threatening damage. Here's the list of times when a towel was thrown by the UFC corners to stop the fight immediately.
5. Andrea Lee vs. Cynthia Calvillo Andrea Lee fought Cynthia Calvillo at UFC Fight Night 197, and Lee just dominated the fight from the get-go. Lee's striking was too much for Calvillo, who in the second round experienced a swelling above his right eye. This forced the corner to stop them by asking the referee, Mark Smith.
4. Stephen Thompson vs. Kevin Holland Stephen Thompson and Kevin Holland fought each other at UFC on ESPN 42, and the fight got stopped in the fourth round. Holland's coach waved in to stop the fight because Holland had suffered a serious injury to his right hand and wasn't able to fight effectively.
3. Tony Ferguson vs. Anthony Pettis Ferguson came across Anthony Pettis at UFC 229, The fight was one of the bloodiest in recent history. Initially in the fight, Pettis got a cut, and as the fight progressed, it became more serious. In the second round, Pettis’ corner decided to waive the fight off.
2. Nate Diaz vs. Josh Thomson Nate Diaz is known for having a great chin and the ability to fight through incurring a lot of damage. However,it wasn't the case at UFC on Fox 7. In the first round against then-strikeforce champion Josh Thomson, Diaz got outstriked and was unable to bounce back. In the second round, Nick Diaz threw the towel in order to stop the fight.
1. Derek Brunson vs. Dricus Du Plessis The middleweight pair fought each other at UFC 285, and it was truly an amazing fight to see. In the first round, Brunson dominated Du Plessis on the ground and took the lead. However, in the second round,Du Plessis made a comeback and outstruck Brunson. This forced Brunson's corner to immediately stop the fight by asking the referee.
