After clinching the Laver Cup for his team, Carlos Alcaraz has carried the confidence into the 2024 China Open as the Spaniard has dominated his opponents so far at the ATP 500 tournament. Alcaraz beat Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard 6-4, 6-4 in his opening-round match and then eased past Dutchman and big server Tallon Griekspoor in the second round.
Alcaraz beat Griekspoor 6-1, 6-2 to set up a quarterfinal clash with Karen Khachanov, who had a contrasting match against Francisco Cerundolo. Although Khachanov won in straight sets, the Russian had to fight for every point as both sets went into a tiebreaker.
Khachanov took the first tiebreak 7-4 but his job became even tougher in the second set when Cerundolo fought till the very end.
The Argentine managed nine points to Khachanov’s 11 in the second tiebreak. Nevertheless, it was a win for the Russian and he now has to face Alcaraz for a place in the semifinal.
