Which country won the most medals at Tokyo Olympics and who finished on top?

Back in 2020, the Tokyo Olympics found itself in grave danger. The horrific COVID-19 pandemic made sure the event had to be postponed by a year. However, when the tournament started on Sunday, July 25, there was no stopping it.

A total of 33 sports took place at the Tokyo Olympics and athletes competed in 339 events, covering 50 disciplines. The tournament couldn’t witness crowds but received massive support from all over the world.

USA

The USA won as many as 113 medals in Tokyo and became the only nation to cross the 100-medal barrier in the mega event. They won 39 golds, 41 silver and 33 bronzes. In swimming and athletes, the USA performed their best, getting 56 medals.

In 28 events, they ran away with medals. In wrestling, shooting and artistic gymnastics, they won a combined tally of 21 medals. They also won medals- three silver, one bronze- in boxing.

China

China ended their Tokyo 2020 campaign with a total of 88 medals. They bagged 38 golds, 32 silver and 18 bronze medals. They won the most medals in diving, bagging seven golds and five silvers. In weightlifting, the Asian country took away seven golds as well.

In table tennis and shooting, they won four gold medals each. In shooting, they won the greatest number of medals- 11- after diving. In artistic gymnastics, swimming and badminton, they lived up to expectations as well.

Japan

Japan brought home an aggregate of 58 medals- 27 golds, 14 silvers and 17 bronzes. In Judo, the Asian country tasted most success, garnering nine golds, two silver and one bronze. Japan did well in wrestling as well, running away with five golds, one silver and one bronze.

In skateboarding and artistic gymnastics, they won five medals in each. In swimming, table tennis, karate and boxing, Japan won a combined tally of 13 medals. Overall, they won medals in 20 sports.

Great Britain

Great Britain did brilliantly in the Olympics as well, garnering 65 medals- 22 golds, 21 silvers and 22 bronzes. In swimming, they performed the best as they took away four golds, two silvers and one bronze. In track cycling, Great Britain also won three golds, three silvers and one bronze.

In sailing and boxing and equestrian, Japan bagged a combined tally of 16 medals- seven golds, four silvers and five bronzes. They also got three silvers and as many bronzes in athletics.

ROC  

Russian Olympic Committee had their fair share of success as well. They won a total of 71 medals- 20 golds, 28 silvers and 23 bronzes. In wrestling, fencing, shooting and artistic gymnastics, they won eight medals each. In wrestling, they won four gold medals.

In boxing, they won as many as six medals- one gold, one silver and four bronzes. In swimming and taekwondo, ROC went away with nine medals. In 20 events, the country won the medals.
