Neeraj Chopra might be one of the top stars in the international javelin throw circuit today, but the athlete had humble beginnings.

Born in Khandra village in Panipat district of Haryana, Chopra comes from a farming family led by his parents, Satish and Saroj Devi. According to his uncle, Bhimsen Chopra, the Asian Games gold medallist is the eldest son of their huge joint family. “There was nothing related to sports in the beginning as there was no sporting environment in the village and in my family,” Neeraj Chopra told NNIS Sports News in 2018.

According to Chopra himself, he went to the stadium for fitness and saw his seniors and friends throwing and that’s how his journey started. When the thrower won the gold medal in the 2018 Commonwealth Games, his family distributed sweets in his village. “I feel good that I am able to do something for my family, for my country. It is something to be very proud of for anyone,” Chopra added in the 2018 interview.

His father Satish Chopra thanked everyone for showering his son with blessings. “I treat him as the son of the country. We have given him birth and brought him up but the wishes and blessings of the country that is with him is more than us. We are proud of him and the whole country is proud of him. We thank everyone,” he said.

Neeraj Chopra will now be competing on the most glorious sporting stage in the world, carrying hopes of every Indian to bring home the country’s first athletics Olympic medal.
