Who is the Owner of NorthEast United FC?

NorthEast United FC is an Indian professional football club based in Guwahati, Assam, that plays in the Indian Super League, India’s top flight. The club was founded on April 13, 2014, during the first season of the Indian Super League. NorthEast United represents India’s eight North-East states, which include Assam, Nagaland, Manipur, Meghalaya, Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh, Tripura, and Mizoram.

The home ground of NorthEast United FC is located at the Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium, also known as Sarusajai Stadium in Guwahati, Assam, India. The stadium is not only used for football matches but it is also used for athletics.

NorthEast United FC qualified for the ISL playoffs for the first time in the 2018-19 season. They did not make it to the finals, however, as they were defeated by Bengaluru FC 4-2 after leading 2-0 in the first leg. The Highlanders had a successful season in 2020-21, reaching the ISL playoffs for the second time. The club drew 1-1 with ATK Mohun Bagan in the first leg of the semi-final and lost the second leg 1-2, finishing with a 2-3 aggregate score and an 11-game unbeaten run.

The club is owned by Bollywood actor and producer John Abraham, Jaya Balan, a perfume businessman and John Abraham’s company JA Entertainment. Shillong Lajong FC and their owner Larsingh Ming Sawyan, as well as Guwahati-based businessman Sanjiv Narain, were also part of the consortium that bid for the franchise. But, Sanjiv Narain left the partnership even before the first season began, and Shillon Lajong left by the end of the second season. John Abraham’s wife, Priya Runchal, is the club’s chairperson.

NOTO, the low-calorie and high-protein ice cream brand, announced a Rs 4 crore investment from actor John Abraham and several venture capital (VC) funds. John owns a  production company, equity-based mutual funds, a football team, a few start-ups, and a fitness company. He plans to start businesses that involve corporate social responsibility (CSR) and motorcycles. John owns Fat Abraham Burger, a restaurant in New Delhi. He also has his own vodka brand (Pure Wonder Abraham) and perfume called “John Abraham Seduction.” In addition, he co-owns the American clothing line Ecko Unltd in India.
