Coco Gauff is seeking her second title of the season since claiming her first in January. The American has been to four semifinals since then but is yet to claim a victory in the finals. The American won her two opening matches in Wimbledon and now will be meeting British Sonay Kartal in the third round, who is aiming to upset her.
The 22-year-old British youngster has been struggling with injuries over the years after coming through the ranks with Emma Raducanu. This year, she has found her footing in the game and has been winning titles in the ITF. In October 2021, she broke into the Top 200, and coming into Wimbledon she is ranked No. 295.

Sonay Kartal vs. Coco Gauff: Match Preview
Sonay Kartal began the year by claiming her first title at the W35 Nottingham in January. The youngster went on to reach the semifinals of the ITF in Portugal and then followed it up with a title at W35 Loughborough. She suffered a first-round exit at the Britain 07A despite being the favorite to claim her fourth title of the season.
Her first WTA competition was at the Nottingham Open a few weeks ago. The 22-year-old was awarded failed to enter the main draw after losing her first qualifying match. However, it seems setting her foot at the All England Club, Kartal, has just been brilliant.
She won her three rounds of qualifying matches and shocked 29th seed Sorana Cristae in the first round winning 3-6, 6-2, 6-0. Kartal then went on to defeat Clara Burel 6-3, 5-7, 6-3 in the second round.
Coco Gauff won her first title of the year in her first tournament. She won the Auckland Open and went on to reach the semifinals of the Australian Open, losing to Aryna Sabalenka. But February was her worst month as she failed to get past the quarterfinals of any tournament. She regrouped at the Sunshine Doubles but was only successful in getting to the semifinals of the Indian Wells Masters.
She began her clay season by losing to Marta Kostyuk in the quarterfinals at the Stuttgart. Additionally, she failed to reach the finals of the French Open and Italian Open, losing to Iga Swiatek in the semifinals. In Wimbledon, she won her first match 6-1, 6-2 against Caroline Dolehide and then Romania’s Anca Todoni with a 6-2, 6-1 in the second round.
Sonay Kartal vs. Coco Gauff: Match Prediction
This is Kartal’s first Wimbledon third-round reach of her career. The British lost to Madison Keys in the first round 0-6, 3-6 last year. Also, Gauff exited in the second round of the 2023 Wimbledon. Both have never played against each other, but Gauff will aim to use her Grand Slam experience to defeat Kartal.
In addition, this is Kartal’s first major tournament this year. The 22-year-old may have enjoyed winning a lot of titles in the ITF, but it’s completely different at a Grand Slam event.
