Halep has had a massive year so far. Firstly, in August, she won her 21st WTA title, at the Prague Open, where she defeated Elise Mertens in the final. Further, the Romanian champ’s 22nd title followed in September, where she beat Karolina Pliskova in the Italian Open final.

Currently the World No.2, she was last featured in the French Open where she lost to the eventual-winner, Iga Swiatek 6-1, 6-2 in the fourth-round. This had come as a surprise as she was the No.1 seed of the tournament and was on a winning streak following her win in Rome.

Moreover, before the start of her clay-court swing, the 29-year-old had pulled out of the US Open due to concerns regarding the coronavirus pandemic.

“After weighing up all the factors involved and with the exceptional circumstances in which we are living, I have decided that I will not travel to New York to play the U.S Open. I would put my health at the heart of my decision,” she had stated.
