India notched up an important win and took a giant stride towards the final of the World Test Championship (WTC) in the third test against England in Ahmedabad. The match turned out to be an eventful and chaotic one as 13 wickets fell on the first day before 17 more fell on the second as the match was wrapped up just after dinner on the second day. Axar Patel was named the Man of the Match for his 11 wickets.
The spinners ruled the roost in the test as apart from Axar, Ravichandran Ashwin and Joe Root shone as well by picking up 6 and 5 wickets respectively. Jack Leach chipped in with 4 as well. With all the talk about the pink ball and the match being a day/night one, the pitch proved to only aid the spinners and they undoubtedly made merry.
World Test Championship qualification scenarios
With the win in the third test, India climbed to the top spot on the points table for the WTC as their points percentage rose to 71. They are also leading on points with 490 but it is percentage that will count to qualification for the final due to the new rules released by the International Cricket Council (ICC) in light of the cancellation of a plethora of series due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
England are now on 64.1% and even a win in the final test will not help them leapfrog New Zealand who are on 70% or India. Australia are third with 69.2% and they will be following the final test between India and England eagerly. A win or draw for India would take them through to the final where they will face New Zealand. However, if England manage to pull off a win and draw the series, it will be Australia facing off against their trans-Tasman rivals in the final.
