Andrey Rublev had a breakout season in 2020. The young Russian has seen tremendous success this year and as a result, his ranking saw a rise up to World No.8. Rublev bagged Five ATP titles this year, in which, three were ATP 500 and two ATP 250.

Rublev also managed to reach the quarterfinals of the French and the US Open, which ultimately helped the 23-year old in qualifying for the prestigious year-ending ATP Finals. However, Rublev had an unreal season, which saw him achieve a joint-record of 41 victories.

In an interview with Sport24, Andrey Rublev expressed his happiness over a successful 2020 season but said that he also desires to win bigger tournaments, like ATP Finals which his countryman Daniil Medvedev managed to do.

Rublev revealed that will give up all his titles in a heartbeat if it means winning the ATP Finals trophy. Rublev tied with World No.1 Novak Djokovic in terms of victories this year (at 41) and The Russian was quick to acknowledge this massive feat.

“In terms of victories, Djokovic and I finished the same way. But I would rather choose indicators like Dani’s – to win the Masters in Bercy and the Final. Or even just the Final,” he said.

“But it’s still a cool feeling, for fun. The very fact that we managed to win a lot of matches. This is a record, I have never had such a number,” he added.

According to Russian tennis legend and a former Grand Slam champion Marat Safin, Andrey Rublev should have won at least a Masters tournament or a Grand Slam in 2020.

“He won five tournaments, but these are not “Masters”, these are not “Grand Slam”. Novak won less but finished first. Andrey needs to switch and play in major tournaments,” said Safin.

Rublev’s quarterfinals appearance at two major Grand Slams in 2020 is a betterment on the Russian’s part, who only managed to go past the 4th stage of a Grand Slam only once since his debut in 2015 up till 2019. His good run in US and France helped him in qualifying for his Maiden ATP Finals, where he managed to defeat the eventual runner-up Dominic Thiem to cap off a great year.
