Last year’s defending champion Ash Barty was a late entrant to the event this year. She used a wildcard and confirmed her participation at the last minute. Last year she beat Dayana Yastremska, 6-2 7-5, to win the title. She will also be the top seed for the event. Barty one may recall was one of the favourite to win the Australian Open until her sudden loss against Karolína Muchová in the Quarter finals.

But, what is Australian Open’s loss turns out to be Adelaide International’s gain, as the early loss means Barty can now participate in this event. Apart from Barty, there are several other top 20 players are on the tournament’s line-up, including  Switzerland’s Belinda Bencic and Britain’s Johanna Konta. Canada’s Bianca Andreescu was also scheduled to be a part of the event, but a last minute injury forced her to withdraw.

Apart from Ash Barty three other Australian players have received wild card entry into the main draw of the tournament. They are Olivia Gadecki, Samantha Stosur and Ajla Tomljanović.
