Muguruza set the tone for the year by reaching the Finals of the Yarra Valley Classic. The Australian Open ended a little disappointingly for her as she got ousted in the round of sixteen by the eventual winner Naomi Osaka, but she bounced back to reach the Finals of the Qatar Open.
She went one better by winning the Dubai Open. At the Miami Open she suffered an unexpected loss at the round of sixteen stage to Bianca Andreescu. Putintseva has not done much in the hardcourt part of the season. In the two rounds here on the clay courts of Charleston she is yet to drop a set. She beat Harriet Dart of Great Britain in the first set and got the better of compatriot Zarina Diyas in the second.
