Muguruza has been in good nick in the last couple of months. She reached the Finals of the Yarra Valley in Australia, and then followed it up with another Finals appearance at the WTA event in Qatar. In between she reached the fourth round of the Australian Open as well, where she lost to the eventual champion Naomi Osaka.

At the Dubai Open this year, she has been seeded number nine. In her first two rounds, she overcame Irina-Camelia Begu and then Amanda Anisimova. Her most impressive win so far has been the one over Iga Swiatek. Swiatek is considered by many as the next big thing in women’s tennis, but the manner of her defeat at the hands of Muguruza was a rude awakening for her. The nineteen year old was given a lesson in tennis by Muguruza, who won the match 6-0 6-4. Her Quarter Final opponent is Aryna Sabalenka. Sabalenka has been in great form as well.

She went into the Australian summer with three consecutive tournament wins, but unfortunately couldn’t win a trophy there in the singles. At the Australian Open she crashed out to Serena Williams in the fourth round in the singles, but won the Australian Open doubles titles with Elise Mertens. In the Qatar Open, she lost to Muguruza in three sets. At the Dubai Open, she had a bye in the first round. In the second she beat Alize Cornet of France easily, Her real test was in the third set against 15th seed Anett Kontaveit. Kontaveit one felt would challenge Sabalenka, but it was a totally one sided match won by Sabalenka 6-3 6-2.

Muguruza is playing with a lot of belief, and the way she was attacking the returns against Swiatek showed she had the fire in her belly as well. Sabalenka is a fantastic player with great power and touch, but does she have the same hunger to win as Muguruza? The match will be decided by who wants to win more desperately.

Match Prediction: Muguruza to win the match in three sets.
