Sabalenka has been in terrific form this season. She has three WTA titles, in Abu Dhabi, Linz and the Ostrava Open to her credit already and recently was the finalist at the Stuttgart Open as well. At the Stuttgart Open, she lost in the Finals to Ash Barty in three sets, 6-3 0-6 3-6. But, it was with the Semi-final victory over Simona Halep that she showed the world that she has the game on clay to beat top opponents. Sabalenka currently has a 9-3 record on clay, which is impressive.

Her first round opponent is thirty-six year old Russian veteran Vera Zvonareva. Back in 2010, Zvonareva was ranked as high as no.2 in the World, but that was a long time ago. In the last few years she has concentrated more on doubles. Her last outing was in the Istanbul Cup where she in the second round to French woman Fiona Ferro

There were questions asked about Sabalenka’s game on clay, but she has given a stunning reply to her doubters by playing some terrific tennis. Zvonareva has a French Open quarter-final to her credit, but that was way back in 2003. This is as easy an opening round encounter, on clay, as Sabalenka can hope to get.

Match Prediction: Aryna Sabalenka will beat Vera Zvonareva in straight sets.
