WWE Summerslam is well on course to become the biggest WWE PPV of the year. This distinction usually goes to the Showcase of Immortals – Wrestlemania. But this year at WWE Wrestlemania 37, only limited fans were present in the live audience.

But now audiences are back in full capacity and WWE wants to deliver a top-notch event. We can expect an action-packed card with all major titles on the line. While other Championship feuds have already started taking shape, one of the feuds that requires a new challenger is for the Intercontinental Championship.

The WWE Intercontinental Championship currently sits on the shoulder of Apollo Crews. Interestingly Crews has quite a history with WWE Summerslam. Throughout his career, Crews has appeared in 3 Summerslam matches and 2 of these matches involved Championship.

Apollo Crews’ first ever Summerslam match was in 2016, when he challenged The Miz for the Intercontinental title. But he ended up on the losing side. His next appearance was in 2019, but he lost to Buddy Murphy via disqualification.

Crews last appeared in Summerslam in 2020 when he entered as the WWE United States Champion. The title was on the line against MVP, and Crews managed to successfully defend his title.

Azeez has helped Crews in defending his title

The Intercontinental Champion was involved in a long feud with the New Day member Big E. But thanks to his Commander Azeez, Crews has managed to defend his title on all the occasions. With Big E winning the WWE Money in the Bank 2021 Men’s ladder match, their rivalry has seemingly ended.

The question now is – Who will challenge Apollo Crews for the Intercontinental title at WWE Summerslam? Considering the current storylines on Smackdown – Cesaro, Shinsuke Nakamura and Otis are the most probable Superstars to go after the title.

WWE Summerslam airs live on 21st August, 2021.
