Year In review: Meiraba Luwang, young star of Indian Badminton

Meiraba Luwang, who hails from Manipur, is a young promising star of Indian Badminton. Currently, he is ranked world no 8 of men’s singles category in BWF Junior ranking, which he achieved on 17th December 2019. He competed 47 matches in 2019 season and out of 47 matches he has won 38 matches and lost 9 matches.

He competed as many as 12 events on 2019 season. Out of 12 events he was crowned champion in 3 events in 2019 BWF calendar year. These events are Russian Junior White Nights 2019, WONCHEON YONEX Korea Junior Open International Challenge 2019, YONEX – SUNRISE Bangladesh Junior International Series 2019. 

He competed as many as 4 BWF junior Grand prix event and he reached final at India Junior International 2019. But in the final against Ken Yon Ong, he fought hard in three set battle before losing 21-13,19-21,21-23 and he finished runners up. He reached round of 16 stage at Pembangunan Jaya Raya Junior Grand Prix 2019 and YONEX Dutch Junior International 2019.

He also reached quarterfinal stage at YONEX German Junior 2019, which is a BWF junior Grand prix event. He also competed prestigious BWF world junior Badminton Championship 2019. But he had a bad outing in this prestigious event. He lost to Su Li Yang 16-21,11-21 in round of 64 stage. He also competed in Badminton Asia Junior Championships 2019 but his campaign ends in round of 32 stage .Three times BWF world junior Badminton champion Kunlavut Vitidsarn defeated him 18-21,21-15,21-8 in round of 32 stage at Badminton Asia Junior Championships 2019.

He has finished 2019 BWF season on strong note after winning YONEX – SUNRISE Bangladesh Junior International Series 2019. He entered this event as a top seed and after getting bye in 1st round he defeated Zhen Yi Ong 21-18,21-12 to reach quarterfinal. On his way to semifinal he outplayed Arnick Plungvachira 21-16,21-14 in quarters.

In semifinal, he faced tough challenge from 4th seed M Fazriq Mohamad Razif but eventually he won three set battle 21-17,14-21,21-15. In final he outplayed Ken Yon Ong 21-14,21-18 to win the title. No doubt, Meiraba Luwang is potential to do well at global events. He would be bright prospect of Indian Badminton on coming days.
